Invest Northern Ireland (INI) is Northern Ireland's regional economic development agency. It is a non-departmental public body (NDPB) of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI), one of 12 Northern Ireland government departments in the devolved Northern Ireland Executive within the United Kingdom (UK). DETI has the crucial role in formulating and delivering economic development policy in terms of Enterprise, Social Economy, Innovation, Energy, Telecoms, and Tourism in Northern Ireland and, in addition, has responsibility for ensuring a modern regulatory framework to support business and protect consumers.
Invest NI (INI) supports business growth and inward investment, promotes innovation, research and development and in-company training, encourages exports and supports local economic development and company start up. DETI's budget is determined by the Department of Finance and Personnel (DFP). INI provides strong government support for business by effectively delivering the Government’s economic development strategies. In addition to regional government, INI liaises closely with both the UK national government and also with local government through, e.g., Belfast City Council. INI has a global network of offices including USA, Middle East, India and the Far East.
Invest NI has been a full partner in 4 FP6 ERA-NET projects and 2 FP7 ERANET+ projects. Invest NI is contracted by the EU to be the Northern Ireland partner in the European Enterprise Network and has formerly hosted the Innovation Relay Centre for the EU.
